Issues : Errors of FC

b. 1

composition: Op. 30 No. 1, Mazurka in C minor

Quatre Mazurkas in FC (→GE) & FE

Souvenir de la Pologne... in EE

4 Mazurkas suggested by the editors

..

In all sources the number of mazurkas in the opus is expressed in full word – Quatre Mazurkas, yet in the main text we provide a digit, understandable regardless of the language. What is more, it cannot be excluded that in the autograph (lost) Chopin wrote a digit, as he did in the preserved autographs of opuses 24 and 50, which the French publisher did not respect in opus 24, replacing the digit with a word.

In FC the title contains a mistake – Quatre Mazurka. The title having been expanded in EE was an arbitrary decision of the publisher – all opuses of Chopinesque Mazurkas were named like that.

No note in FC (→GE)

The missing e1 crotchet at the beginning of the bar must be an oversight by Fontana.

No markings in FC (→GE)

..

The easiest explanation for the absence of pedal marks in this bar in FC is the copyist's oversight. However, it is likely that it was Chopin himself that overlooked them in [A] and added them there after FC had already been finished.

b. 24

composition: Op. 30 No. 1, Mazurka in C minor

..

The sources do not include a  restoring b on the 3rd beat of the bar, which means that this accidental was also absent in [A]. In the main text, we correct this oversight, patent in this harmonic context and generally fairly typical of Chopin.

b. 41

composition: Op. 30 No. 1, Mazurka in C minor

..

In FC (→GE) there is no  raising a1 to a1 on the last quaver in the bar. According to us, the mistake could have already been committed by Chopin in [A]. It is indicated by overlooked naturals also in bar 43 – two oversights of the very naturals to a notes seem highly unlikely for a copyist; however, they are not unusual in Chopin's autographs, who would often mark alterations only the first time a given note appears in a bar.
